This is known. SIMBL and Input Managers will not work in Leopard, so we will have to find another way to hack into iPhoto. We are working on it.

When will you know?

Postby Aristophanes » Tue Oct 09, 2007 4:29 am

Is this to imply that iPhoto in Leopard will not be supporting third-party plug-ins? This has been a terrible problem in the new iMovie.

I have been looking at purchasing KM but require Leopard compatibility as our new machines will all have Leopard when it starts rolling in. There will be no option to "downgrade" to Tiger.

Until then I guess we'll have out off buying KM. Sorry. Need to know.

iPhoto, in any version of Mac OS X, has never supported any plug-ins, except for exporter plug-ins. So all plug-ins to iPhoto, such as Keyword Manager or Keyword Assitant, have been using various hacks to load into iPhoto and do their thing.

In the current versions of Mac OS X, it is not all that difficult to load a plug-in into another application, using something called Input Managers. Apple has disabled this functionality in Leopard (with good reason I might add), but there is no functionality to replace it.

There are other ways to break into an application, and we are currently exploring them all and deciding what way is the best, and less intrusive. iPhoto 7 is definitely more difficult to load into, than say iPhoto 6, since Apple seem to have added more and more checks to make sure no alien code (that would be Keyword manager) is loaded into iPhoto.

I feel reasonable confident that we'll be able to update Keyword Manager to be compatible with iPhoto 7 running on Leopard. In fact, we have found a way to do it. But I can't guarantee that Apple won't close that hole in the future.

I would suggest you wait until Leopard has been released before deciding whether or not to purchase Keyword Manager.

That is good news. I guess you can expect a new release of Keyword Manager on Sunday or so.

Hi there,

any news????
I forgot all about my Keyword Manager until after I'd bought and installed Leopard. Now I'm completely frustrated that I can't use iPhoto the way I wanted to....

We've completed a new version of Keyword Manager that is compatible with Mac OS X Leopard. Since we've had to make some big changes to the code, we've decided to release this version as a beta, before releasing it to the public.

As always, before install any kind of software, and especially a beta version, back up all your important data. That includes your entire iPhoto library, which is something you should be doing frequently anyway.

Download the beta of KM 1.4 here:

Please post any bugs you find in this version. Thanks.

Yes indeed, you guys at bullstorm ROCK! I too didn't even think about the fact that I wouldn't have Keyword Manager after upgrading to Leopard. Thanks so much!

BTW, KM works flawlessly so far.

Hej,

thanks for the incredibly quick update; unfortunately it doesn't work for me:

- the installer quits with the error "could not write receipt for 'keywordmanagerplugin'"

- iPhoto crashes afterwards reproducibly on every launch. The crashlog says

Process: iPhoto [9438]
Path: /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/MacOS/iPhoto
Identifier: com.apple.iPhoto
Version: ??? (???)
Build Info: iPhotoProject-3470000~9
Code Type: X86 (Native)
Parent Process: launchd [386]

Date/Time: 2007-10-29 19:45:01.071 +0100
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5 (9A581)
Report Version: 6

Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP)
Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000
Crashed Thread: 0

Dyld Error Message:
Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/UpgradeChecker.framework/Versions/A/UpgradeChecker
Referenced from: /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/MacOS/iPhoto
Reason: image not found

The UpgradeChecker framework mentioned in the dump is indeed not present, only a RealUpgradeChecker which I suppose is renamed by the installer (?).

File permissions on iPhoto seem to be correct on first sight - drwxrwxr-x root admin.

I installed Leopard cleanly and transferred my user account via the migration utility; the account itself is only a standard account, but I was asked correctly for admin access on installation.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Cheers,
Jan

Hello,
the beta works well on my mac (10.5 clean install, iPhoto 7)
I was waiting for Leopard to buy KM... it's done. ;)
Thanks for the quick update.

Jan,

Thanks for the bug report. Seems like there is a problem with using the installer when the user account is not an admin account. We'll have to look into it.

To restore iPhoto, rename RealUpgradeChecker to UpgraderChecker.

Hi Johan,

I tried it again with my admin account after my post; this time the installer failed with a message saying it was unable to create some files under /tmp.

Strangely enough, it did manage to create a folder there called keywordmanagerplugin.pkg.102045FoVXB, owned by my admin account and containing an installplan and a receipt in a subfolder.

I restored iPhoto through Time Machine before retrying, so I don't assume the first botched installation had any effect on the second try.

See, we gave you a reason to try out Time Machine! ;-)

Seriously though, that is very helpful. Hopefully we'll be able to track down this bug soon. In the meantime, could you open up a Terminal and execute this:

ls -la /tmp
