Whether you have 300 or 10 000 photos in your iPhoto library, organizing the photos with keywords will help you quickly find what you are looking for. In iPhoto 6, this was a really cumbersome task, which got some improvement in iPhoto 7; but Keyword Manager really takes it to the next level.

Using Keyword Manager to manage your keywords allows you to quickly and easily tag all photos in your library, regardless of how many photos you have and how many keywords you want to use. Since Keyword Manager uses iPhoto's own keyword system internally, it is completely safe! Even if you decide to stop using Keyword Manager, all your keywords will remain!

In addition to offering a new quicker way of tagging photos, Keyword Manager allows you to group your keywords hierarchically. For example, you can have the keyword Paris as a subkeyword to France. Every time you assign Paris to a photo, France will also be assigned to that photo.

Keyword Manager is made to fit right into iPhoto, and it is designed to stay out of your way when you are not using it. It also helps you along when assigning keywords by offering suggestions based on your typing, taken from all previously created keywords, and the names of people in your address book.

Keyword Manager features are too numerous to mention in just one page, but below are some of the highlights of the plug-in. In addition to those features, Keyword Manager allows you to work with keywords while in full-screen mode, share your keywords among several iPhoto libraries, and allows you to easily sort, create and delete keywords without opening the preferences dialog.

I. Nested Keywords

Keyword Manager allows you to order your keywords hierarchically by simply dragging them onto each other. Later, when you assign a keyword to a photo, all its parent keywords will also be assigned to that photo. In the example to the left, when you tag a photo of your grandmother outside Opéra Garnier, the photo will also be tagged with the keywords Paris, France and Europe.

II. Speedy Photo Tagging

Tagging every photo in a 10 000-photo library can be a gruesome task unless it is really quick and easy to assign keywords to photos; it is also easy to create new keywords.

Using the powerful, but easy to use, Quick Assigner you can quickly assign any keyword to a photo by simply starting to type the keyword name in the text fieldk. Keyword Manager will display a list of all your keywords that begin with the letters you just typed. Select one of the keywords in the list with the keyboard arrows -- hit enter -- and you're done!

Creating a new keyword is just as easy! Just type in the new keyword in the text field and press enter. A new keyword will be created, and assigned to the selected photos.

III. A Dog and a Horse on a Meadow.

You can quickly find a certain set of photos by using the built-in filtering tool. By clicking on the circles next to the keywords, only the photos that are tagged with those keywords will be shown.

Hold down the option key while clicking to exclude a certain keyword from the filter. For example, you can ask Keyword Manager to show all photos that contain the keywords Coffee and Milk, but not Sugar.

This feature will come in handy if you are a professional photographer with a large library. With little effort you can narrow the scope of your filter, until you find exactly the perfect photos you are looking for.

IV. Knows Your Friends and Family

Keyword Manager will automatically suggest the people you have in your address book when you begin typing their names. You've already entered them once in your address book; why do it again?

V. Parlez-vous Français?

Names and words with funny letters may be fun to look at, but they can also be slow to enter on your keyboard. Keyword Manager allows you to type without worrying about diacritics (e.g. aoc instead of åöç), and will automatically do the right thing.

Q: Can you send me my registration code again?

Go to this page and enter the same email address that you used to purchase Keyword Manager. Your registration code will be sent to your email. Please allow for up to 15 minutes for the email to reach your inbox. If you do not get an email, check your junk mail folder.

Q: Does Keyword Manager work with Snow Leopard?

Yes! If you have installed Keyword Manager 1.5.5 and it still wont load in iPhoto, please read this for more information.

Q: Will Keyword Manager work with iPhoto 8 (iLife '09)?

Yes! As of version 1.5 we do support iPhoto 8.

Q: How do I uninstall Keyword Manager?

A: The easiest way to uninstall Keyword Manager is to use the installer program that you used to install the plug-in. If you don't have the installer on your computer, you can download it again from this website. You can also uninstall Keyword Manager manually by deleting the file KeywordManagerPlugin.bundle in the folder ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/.

Q: Where have the Keyword Manager windows gone? I can still see the Keywords menu.

Please download the latest version of Keyword Manager. In versions before 1.5.5 the windows could sometimes end up outside the screen, with no means of getting them back. This should no longer happen.

Q: Why does Keyword Manager not load when I start iPhoto?

Pleae download the diagnostics tool that will help you to figure out why Keyword Manager is not loading in iPhoto. After downloading the program, start it and wait a few seconds while it fetches your system information. When the diagnostics are done a log will be printed in the text area. The log will often contain a clue as to why it is not loading.

Q: Why are my keywords not searchable using Spotlight?

A: This is a problem that occurs on some systems. Please read this discussion thread at Apple's support pages.
